Event | Native Fashion Show to Honor Women

The American Indian Graduate Student Association (AIGSA) will be hosting a fashion show to kick off the Arizona State University Powwow in Tempe next weekend.

Featured designers include Marco Arviso, Kevin Duncan, House of Darylene, Dineh Couture, Earle Couture, Glacsy, Genevieve Hardy, Cher Thomas, Shayne Watson and Kevin Whitehat.

The theme for the second annual show is 'Our Past, Our Present Woven Together: Honoring Our Native Women in Fashion.' Brenda Norrell at Censored News explains: "The theme highlights the strength of Native women, which is drawn from their Native cultures, values, and traditions and uniquely woven into their daily modern lives.

I attended the “Fifth Annual Native American Fashion Show” held at the UNM Continuing Education Building on March 24th, 2011. The event was sponsored by the Highland Native American Leadership Council.

This was only the second Native fashion event I have ever attended. When I first arrived right at 6pm when the show was supposed to start there were not many people there. However when the show started one of the MC’s mentioned that usually people trickle in as the show progresses and sure enough by the end there were a lot more seats filled.

Glacsy Clothes Redefine Native Fashion

Tionne Linder was once again lost in sketching fashion designs when her husband, Ray Linder, suggested she take her artwork a step further by creating clothing. "I didn't know how to sew at the time," Linder recalled. "But I tried out a few outfits and they turned out nice."

The couple began brainstorming business ideas to put Linder's talent to best use. Using her previous work in photography and makeup artistry, the couple decided to explore several aspects of the fashion industry. "The ideas just came to us and our business seemed clear," Linder said.
