Indigenous Peoples Day 2015 at NYU

In September, a representative for the Native American and Indigenous Students Group at NYU, Amanda Foote, reached out to Beyond Buckskin. They wanted to buy the Native Americans Discovered Columbus tee for their Columbus Day events. It was so great to see students initiate positive change, and I was reminded of my days at Dartmouth and the University of Arizona, where I frequently found myself in groups wanting to educate and empower through events. I'm sure you all can relate.

Hello Autumn, Goodbye Summer

"Well hello stranger!"

That's the sound of me re-entering the Beyond Buckskin website after being absent for, oh, six weeks or so.

But I haven't been 'really' absent. The last time that I published on this site was when I was sitting in my hotel room at Buffalo Thunder Resort. I was in Santa Fe for Indian Market. We had just launched the Paul Frank x Native Designers collection, and, little did I know, time would fly, and here I am.

I post a lot of fashion news on the Beyond Buckskin Facebook Fan Page. It's a great way to share info quickly without having to prep and write an entire post on it.

I've recently started a 'Best of' post for each month where I highlight some of the coolest images, the most interesting articles, the biggest misappropriators, and the neatest videos that were posted to the Beyond Buckskin Facebook page. So, now that we're way into November, it's safe to look back at October and pick out some good ones, so, fashionistas, here you go:

Native Americans Discovered Columbus

Every year we celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival to the Americas. Why? He was no hero.

Let's flip this. Reconsider the story of discovery. Wear this tee on "Columbus Day" - Monday, October 8, 2012 - to show your solidarity with Native Americans.

The New Trend: Calling Out Racist Trends

Is calling out racist fashion trends the new trend?

The Huffington Post recently published a scathing article about Forever 21. Titled 'Forever 21 Sells Faux Native American Items in Their Columbus Day Sale,' the article takes a critical look at the items that were 'on sale' for the holiday that many Native Americans want abolished. And the author found Native-inspired clothes on sale, for Columbus Day. WTF F21.

The author wrote, "it just seems like someone over at Forever 21 could have given the items in their Columbus Day sale a little more thought.

Fuck Columbus

It's that time of yea again, when something needs to be said.

This man has a National American holiday named for him even though he never set foot on American soil.

He is responsible for leading the massive genocide of Indigenous populations in Caribbean. Committing atrocities such as slicing open pregnant women, slavery, rape and outright murder.

We want to know why this man deserves a holiday.

That's why we say FUCK COLUMBUS AND THE SHIP HE CAME IN ON.
