Project 562: Changing The Way We See Native America

The images that Edward Curtis shot over 100 years ago continue to be popular representations of what an Indian is supposed to look like today. So when Native photographer Matika Wilbur picked up her camera and starting capturing images of contemporary Native American people, tribal members throughout the US opened their doors to support and be a part of this contemporary movement to reclaim how we are presented in mass media.

Lookbook Shoot Behind the Scenes

2013 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Beyond Buckskin!

I have spent the past couple weeks traveling, and we just wrapped up a stunning photoshoot in downtown LA and in the Angeles National Forest.

Organized and styled by Bethany Yellowtail (Crow/Northern Cheyenne), the images were shot by Thosh Collins (Pima/Osage) and spotlighted Native models Martin Sensmeier (Tlingit) and Blake Sisk (Osage).

Video | Dmonic Intent: NZ New Generation Fashion

Taking the dark things and making them pretty.

That is exactly what the Maori family design team behind Dmonic Intent accomplishes in each garment.

DI showed their first full collection at New Zealand Fashion Week, which kicked off last Monday, and ended two days ago. You can click here or here to see some images.

The video below shows some behind the scenes footage of their designs in the days leading up to NZFW. Their beautiful and brilliant barcode chin tattoo is a highlight, and be sure to watch through to the end snapshots.

Photographer Profile | Tyson Anderson

Right now, I want to share with you some background info on Tyson Anderson, the artist behind Tyson Anderson Photography.

Tyson is a member of the Sayisi Dene First Nation, born and raised in northern Manitoba. This guy captures images that radiate with an anticipatory energy that comes when you take a deep breath in just before something major is about to happen. And, as you will see from the interview below, he is amazingly articulate and has an extraordinary story - Tyson is only 19.
